Entering the business world for the first time can raise a number of concerns a man never before thought upon. While his résumé and degree are essential, in approaching potential employers, he must also consider numerous details of personal presentation. A stylish suit, matching shoes, and proper tie clasp may not get him the job, but a sloppy or ostentatious appearance could very well lose it for him. It is essential for an applicant to look professional, and one item that is crucial to this is a briefcase.
Though there is considerable variation among attire, briefcases for men are fairly standard in the professional workplace. However, as with most menswear, there is a huge selection of cases from which to choose. They vary in material, make, brand, function, and, of course, price. This last factor is a deciding element for most people, and so it is helpful to decide beforehand how much you will spend. In stores like Wal-Mart and Target, briefcases are available for less than twenty dollars. These are made from synthetic materials, and often the construction is not top of the line. However, for a man on a tight budget (like those just out of college), these choices may be a matter of necessity. However, you might consider spending an extra twenty to move into the thirty to sixty dollar range which will allow you to purchase genuine leather and clasps that work. In both instances, avoid locks that look as if they might break.
Less likely to break are those cases costing between one hundred and five hundred dollars. These can be purchased at department stores such as JC Penny’s and Dillard’s and often come with guarantees. Here there is a wider selection, and you will need to decide between types of leather and even color; opt for simple tones of brown or black as they present a more businesslike feel. Perhaps more personal preference than business-required are those men’s briefcases that range from hundred to over three thousand dollars. These prices are often attached to name brands, such as the Gucci fabric cases (around eight hundred) available at Saks Fifth Avenue or their leather options (usually around two thousand). Other similar brands include Coach, Prada, and Louis Vuitton which all feature men’s briefcase options.
Near the top of list, though, is John Lobb’s collection that starts at thirty-two hundred. Don’t worry, though, if you can’t make the massive investment in latest Calvin Klein; you’ll find great quality and a stylish look in any range. Focus on practicality and the image you want to present, and make your briefcase match your own personality without overpowering the rest of your look. It is, after all, you who makes your own success; the briefcase is just the assistant.
